Dr. Chiu is a member of the Cancer Therapeutics Program at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Prior to starting his independent lab at the University of Pittsburgh, he received unique interdisciplinary training towards cancer bioinformatics: BS in Electrical Engineering at National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan (2010) and PhD in Bioinformatics in an integrative environment of biomedical engineering and medicine at National Taiwan University (2015). Dr. Chiu conducted his postdoctoral research at Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute at the University of Texas Health San Antonio in research labs of Drs. Yidong Chen and Peter Houghton.
Dr. Chiu’s research interests include bioinformatics, machine learning, cancer genomics, and pharmacogenomics. The goal of his research is to systematically model genomics and pharmacogenomics to study cancer biology and improve cancer therapy. He is the recipient of the prestigious NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award for his work to develop deep learning methods that extract multi-omic signatures to predict the responses of pediatric cancer cells to chemical and genetic perturbations. He also leads research projects sponsored by:
Dr. Chiu has been an active member of the academic enterprise, teaching and mentoring others. Outside of research, Dr. Chiu is a badminton player and has earned a professional “A Rank” (Switch Sports 😃).
